Tuhin Kanta Pandey : The latest update comes from market regulator SEBI. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has selected Tuhin Kanta Pandey for the government agency. Pandey will be the new chairman of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). His term will be for the next three years. Currently, Tuhin Kanta Pandey is serving as the Finance Secretary.
Sebi appoints Tuhin Kanta Pandey as new chairman
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Shri Tuhin Kanta Pandey, IAS (OR: 1987), Finance Secretary and Secretary, Department of Revenue, as Chairman, Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) for a period of three years from the date of assumption of charge or until further orders, whichever is earlier, an official government order said.
Tuhin Kanta Pandey has played many important roles
Pandey has held several key roles before assuming his role as Revenue Secretary in January 2025. He played a key role in reforming the income tax slabs and customs duties under the budget presented on February 1. He also led efforts on a new income tax bill, which is currently under parliamentary review. His tenure as Revenue Secretary lasted less than two months.
Background of Tuhin Kanta Pandey
Tuhin Kanta Pandey’s career has been in various important roles in the central and state governments. He holds a master’s degree in economics from Punjab University and an MBA from the UK. His previous positions include Joint Secretary in NITI Aayog and Deputy Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce. He has also worked with the regional office of UNIDO.
In Odisha, which is his home cadre, Pandey worked as a head in departments like health, general administration, commercial tax, transport and finance. He also held leadership roles in Odisha State Finance Corporation and Odisha Small Industries Corporation.
Madhabi Puri to replace Butch
Madhabi Puri Buch’s term as Sebi chairman ends on March 1. She assumed office on March 2, 2022, becoming the first woman to head SEBI. Butch had succeeded Ajay Tyagi, who served for five years from March 2017 to February 2022. Prior to Ajay Tyagi, UK Sinha had held the post of Sebi chairman for six years.
Tuhin Kanta Pandey’s contribution
Pandey’s key contributions include heading DIPAM (Department of Investment and Public Asset Management) since October 2019. During his tenure, he played a key role in the disinvestment of Air India and the listing of LIC.
